From the Desk of Director

The Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) was established in March 1999 as an autonomous Institution under Department of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur. Now, the Centre is functioning under the Planning Department, Government of Manipur since 18th July, 2021. MARSAC is the Nodal Agency for all Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems and Global Positioning System related works, procurement, supply & maintenance, analyzing and creation of data etc. Before MARSAC was established as an autonomous institution, it was functioning under erstwhile Directorate of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur as Remote Sensing Cell with limited manpower since 1989. The first project completed during 1989-90 was the Land Use Survey project of Manipur in 1:50,000 scale. The data generated under the project was widely used by the line departments of the State Government. Since its establishment, the Centre has started its journey by dong in hoist works and extended to nationwide projects under different ministries. The database generated so far have been using by use departments, academicians, schools, individuals etc.

Today, the use of geo-spatial technology is also becoming a mandate for every department by creating awareness amongst the departments, stakeholders, business communities and the masses for the need for transparency in governance. As such, MARSAC is actively involved in the mapping, inventory, managing, monitoring, asset mapping, for the sustainable development and for betterment of the lives of the common citizen. Urban applications, agriculture, sericulture, soil, land use, roads, water bodies and rivers, watershed, drainages, drought management, forest, geology and mining, archaeology and conservation of heritage forts, ecology etc., are some of the domains in which MARSAC has made special contribution.

MARSAC has been assigned to develop a geo-database for Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act, 2014. The Centre is also extending services to the various line departments/ agencies by providing vital information’s of natural resources for different schemes/ projects planning. Academician/ Researches are continuously working in the Centre from different parts the country. The Centre is also assigned various important and time bound working from higher authority from time to time.

I am sure that MARSAC shall be able to take a major role in providing various geo-spatial data to cater needs of the state in the years to come.
